Rexroth optimizes cycle time and energy consumption with the MTX cta and MTX ega

New analysis tools IndraMotion MTX cta (Cycle Time Analyzer) and MTX ega (Energy Analyzer) enable the cycle times and energy consumption of machine tools to be improved at the same time and help machine manufacturers and operators measure the motion and consumption of every NC block online and in real time. The results are presented in table and graphic format and, for the first time, provide developers with the factual data needed to optimize programming and track success.

Cycle times and energy consumption are the two biggest factors that can considerably reduce the total cost of ownership of machine tools when leveraged properly. The dynamics of today’s servo motors already reach values that allow for nothing more than minimal improvements in cycle times to be achieved, however. A much greater potential for reducing cycle times lies in making all programmed PLC and CNC processes transparent. The better efficiency that results contributes not only to an optimal machine, but also facilitates monitoring during production operation.

Components designed to lower consumption already utilize on-demand control and energy recovery technology to realize noticeable savings, which is why the software-based cycle time/energy analysis tools from Rexroth now also incorporate the system level for additional optimization.

The software integrated into the IndraMotion MTX controller measures movement time to 0.1 ms and the energy consumed by each NC block online in real time. The table-based and graphical presentation of these measurements reveal potential for further improvement in this area. Unnecessary acceleration and deceleration when a position is approached at a right angle, for example, can be minimized if programmers use splines and grinding patterns to stabilize movement and thus reduce energy consumption, with marginally shorter movement times. A reference function gauges success by directly indicating the savings achieved.

The measurements can also be used to verify that all axes have been dimensioned properly. Initial analysis results for production machines show that many axes use drives that are larger than they need to be. By supplying only the drive force required, manufacturing costs can be reduced without negatively impacting the performance of the machine.

The analysis tool also takes into account the auxiliary units for the hydraulic and coolant supply lines to provide an overview of the machine’s total energy consumption while breaking it down by actuator and process step.

The data acquired points the manufacturer in the right direction for making design improvements and draws the operator’s attention to areas in which production efficiency can be optimized. Rexroth Service offers assistance in analyzing the data in detail and optimizing the system as required.

Continuous monitoring of consumption also leads to better preventive maintenance. A condition-monitoring instrument, the software detects periods of increased power input as an indicator of wear and warns the operator before a breakdown occurs.

The MTX cta and MTX ega analysis tools can be used in all areas of production machining like the precision-scalable system solutions of the IndraMotion MTX family.
