Application Story: Rexroth Servos Help Bandage Packaging Line Boost Speed, Improve Flexibility

Rexroth controller, drives, motors, HMI and motion profile make faster production speeds stick at Aso bandage company, giving them more productivity on the packaging line and allowing them to remove an entire machine in the process.

(Hoffman Estates, IL – www.boschrexroth-us.com) One of the world’s largest producers of adhesive bandages and suppliers of wound care products in both the medical and retail markets, Aso, LLC (Sarasota, FL – www.asocorp.com) can now box up bandages 30 percent faster than ever with a new servo-driven rotary fan feeder machine.

With application support from the Bosch Rexroth Corporation Electric Drives and Controls unit and their distributor partner Gulf Controls (Tampa, FL – www.gulfcontrols.com), Aso used the Rexroth IndraDrive system, PPC controller, MSK motors, IndraControl HMI, IndraLogic, and VisualMotion technology along with a critical motion profile to give its machine lightning speed. Now, Aso has the flexibility to run small batches of product with the same quality and accuracy as larger batches, and at the same high speeds.

Essentially, the rotary fan feeder is a high speed die-cutting machine. An operator threads a perforated roll of sealed bandages into the feed station and onto a large reel where they are registered and then cut into groupings based on the recipe data for the packaging requirement.

Once cut, the bandages are dropped into the individual boxes that end up on the retailer’s shelf for consumer use. The boxed bandages then continue on to the cartoning portion of the line where they are placed in cartons or shrink wrapped together for shipment.

Previously, the “bursting” section of the line would feed the cut bandages into an indexing machine used for packaging assorted orders and then move on to cartoning. Now, the indexing machine can be removed entirely from the line because the bursting speed of the servo-driven fan feeder can keep pace with the speed of the cartoning portion down the line.
