| Liner Notes: About the Music in Our Lean Podcasts |
 |
We’ve chosen to use traditional banjo music as the background to our lean podcasts for a reason. Like traditional assembly methods, there are many ways for a banjo artist to adapt a song to fit his or her personal playing style and to achieve a unique result. The implementation of lean manufacturing initiatives is similar: The technology you deploy is not new, but the lean "journey" pushes you to adapt your practices in original ways to achieve a better result.

The artists you’ll hear in the background on our podcasts may not be well known. But they’re having fun while striving for continuous improvement. So even if you’re not a fan of bluegrass or old-time banjo music, we invite you to learn more about the artists we’re featuring on our podcasts, and to download or purchase music from their websites. Every lean project should be sprinkled with a healthy dose of fun.

Podcast #15 Featured Artist: George Seymour
Song: "Moonshine Runner's Getaway"

George started playing banjo in 1978 after being inspired by banjo music on Vermont Public Television and Earl Scruggs. In 1981 George won first place in the Bluegrass division at the prestigious Craftsbury Banjo Contest. He also won second place with original material in 1983.

Since then, George has played in several bands, including the New Cross Country Band (in which he played pedal steel guitar), which won the New England division of the Wild Turkey Battle of Country Bands in 1984, eventually placing third in the nation in the national competition in Nashville. The band appeared on Vermont Public Television and also opened for country music star George Jones.

Now, George plays for several country music bands and is also a member of Rusty DeWees's band The Fellers. They recorded and released the CD Gold Diggers Beware in 2003. George also performed with the Logger's Variety Shows.

In 2004, George decided that he wanted to focus more exclusively on banjo and bluegrass, so he formed the band Steel Rail Bluegrass early that year. Now he says he’s looking forward to playing bluegrass and the banjo for a long time to come.

If you'd like to hear even more of this happy music, Craig plays Gospel with Singleton Street (sound files and CDs available at www.myspace.com/singletonstreet) and Old-timey traditionals with the Eelpout Stringers (www.myspace.com/eelpouts).
