From logs to paper

For years, Bosch Rexroth Pneumatics has not only followed the development of the pulp and paper industry, but have actively participated in it, by cooperating with companies that are leaders in the fields. We have also made our own contributions, especially in the area of valve technology.

Manufacturing exactly the components you require

For wood handling, chipping and grinding, robust components are required that can withstand an outdoor environment. Bosch Rexroth has cylinders with reinforced scrapers in metal. For fiber lines, wet ends and coating operations, products are needed that can take dampness, heat and washing. Here you can select components with acid-proof material in the exposed parts, for example, pneumatic cylinders with special scrapers and high temperature seals, and flow control valves as well as pneumatic manual and mechanically actuated valves for high temperature applications.

In the drying section of paper machines - in reeling, winding and packing operations - it is preferable to use components that are adapted for heavy engineering applications. In our extensive product portfolio, you will find components in different versions and with different specifications, for example, tie-rod cylinders and profile cylinders, reinforced scrapers, cylinders with or without piston rods, rotary actuators and vacuum components.

To control such components, it is important to ensure that they work together as integrated system. At Bosch Rexroth, you will find a complete range, with everything from FRLs for preparation of compressed air, a safety class of IP 67 (NEMA 6) and a variety of valve sizes, to E/P converters and positioners for process valve regulation, and systems for two-wire communication.

Ideal Cushioning
Bosch Rexroth Pneumatics has developed the concept of Ideal Cushioning for air cylinders. When using the Bosch Rexroth ISO/VDMA cylinder line, cushions can be adjusted ideally to achieve reduced cycle times, reduced noise and vibration, and increased cylinder life. Ideal Cushioning means that there is no end of stroke bounce, i.e. the direction of travel of the piston is the same throughout the entire cushioning sequence, and that its velocity is exactly zero when it reaches the end of its travel. The steps include measuring piston velocity in both directions, which is made easy by an electronic meter available from Bosch Rexroth. Speeds are then adjusted to conform to a maximum for a given pressure and cylinder load. Next the cushions are adjusted properly through a series of specific steps to achieve the ideal performance described above.

Ideal Cushioning has been used successfully in sawmills and other wood industry applications to reduce cycle times of bin sorters, trim saws, waste gates, etc. A sawmill recently increased the speed of their bin sorter line 35% by applying Ideal Cushioning at their facility in the Northwest.

Ceram Air Valves
In all phases of pulp and paper production, one of the most predominate products we provide is the Ceram pneumatic directional control valve. The first valve to utilize sliding ceramic plates for basic sealing functions, the Ceram has become the standard valve for many companies in the industry. The ceramic plates allow the valve to withstand harsh environments and typical "less than perfect" compressed air conditions. The ceramic plates shrug off contaminates that cause many other valves to fail. By outlasting the competition, the valve has saved the industry millions in maintenance and replacement costs.

Web Tension Control & Pneumatics:
Pneumatics ( or "air") in web tension control is a type of force-balancing act. High pressure air is applied automatically to one side, or the other, of the diaphragm cylinder moving the cylinder shaft in the desired correction direction. The pressure is preset to match the desired operating tension. When the desired or preset tension level is achieved, the cylinder pressure is neutralized and held at that point. If another upset, or change in tension is sensed, the process starts correcting all over again. Our Series RDC Diaphragm Cylinder features a nearly frictionless movement without sticking or slipping. Used in combination with our pressure regulator valve units, pneumatics offers a dancer control for web printing and converting operations in both wide and narrow web applications.

Maintaining precise tension control with electro-pneumatic pressure regulators and low-inertia, low friction pneumatic cylinders, offers precise control over a wide range of tensions and web positions for all web materials, ribbons and related substrates. The pneumatic application geometry ranges from swing arm compensation units to ball screw compensators both in vertical and horizontal positions. Pneumatic tension control provides a wide range of tension adjustments not available in other mechanical systems such as torsion springs, etc.
