Preamble
Achieving More Together

Dear Readers,

Increasing energy efficiency is often considered one of the most important topics concerning the future. Yes, and for us the future has already begun. Specific measures can already be implemented using existing technologies. It is worth looking beyond individual measures to consider systems as a whole.
A current study by the Fraunhofer Institute for System and Innovation Research shows a similar direction. According to this study the core processes of the manufacturing industry consume only around one third of the total energy, with auxiliary processes accounting for the remaining two thirds. On the one hand, this shows success in the continuous increase in efficiency with new machines and systems; on the other hand, it is a clear sign that the auxiliary processes need to be reassessed. With these auxiliary processes systems are frequently to be found, which have been running exactly the same way for years and which demonstrate the same energy consumption, irrespective of whether or not the system is operating at full power.
We have now reached a point where great progress is being made in implementing energy efficient measures in an economic way, by combining different drive and control technologies. Rexroth offers products and solutions for all drive, control and motion technologies – both specialized and on an integrated basis. Our customers and partners benefit due to the fact that they do not have to wait for some magic technology to appear in the future. Together we can achieve more by starting today to increase energy efficiency at all levels of the industrial production process. There are some examples to be found in this special edition of our drive&control Magazine.
This is an investment, which pays off not only for the environment. Energy costs account for more than half of life-cycle costs of machines and systems. Lower consumption through greater efficiency pays for itself several times over. We need only to invest the energy to want to achieve more using less!

Yours
