Tech Podcast: What does the management shell do?
The management shell is a standardised digital model with modern interfaces that offers information and functions for a component. But what exactly is still inside the bulky term? In the latest episode of our tech podcast "Industry rethought", Constantin Ziesche explains the meta model of the administration shell, provides insights into its drawers and shows the possibilities of the "Asset Administration Shell".

"The first information point for technical and professional data around an asset - the term management shell hides many possibilities with simple and freely accessible means. Constantin Ziesche is responsible for the management shell in the model factory in Ulm and explains the metamodel from different angles in our tech podcast. The sub-models become drawers containing the documentation, the digital nameplate, functions, measurement and runtime data, KPIs, geometry data and much more information about the asset.
But how do I make this information available, what software can I pour it into? In the interview, Constantin Ziesche discusses not only the interfaces through which information can be read and written, but also how it can be imported and exported and dynamically integrated with each other in software solutions. Using the example of intelligent floors, Constantin Ziesche also shows how these can be described and even controlled via the management shell itself.
Therefore, the excursion to the management shell also leads via the AASX Package Explorer and open source approaches such as Eclipse BaSyx to the programming of the management shell. Can the new standard management shell establish itself in the future and also internationally? Does it provide the best overview and insight into all my assets? And how does it relate to existing standards such as OPC UA?
