Twice the power, yet light and flexible

Twice the power, yet light and flexible

The Hägglunds CBP Tandem is a powerhouse that combines great flexibility with easy configuration to match torque and speed requirements.

Bosch Rexroth has developed a true powerhouse in the shape of the Hägglunds CBP Tandem, a flexible motor unit with peak power of up to 5 MW. Despite its power, the Tandem motor is relatively compact and light, a combination that is much in demand for applications in the process industry and renewable energy sector.

The CBP Tandem is based on the successful Hägglunds Compact CBP motors. Because these motors are designed to produce high torque at relatively high speed, they are suitable for applications that require very high power. The Tandem design enables two motors to be coupled together to create a very powerful and versatile unit. The choice of Hägglunds CBP motors that are combined depends on the specific application and the load pattern for which the unit is to be optimized.

A CBP Tandem consists of a front motor, a rear motor, and a tandem kit that couples the components. A Tandem unit based on a pair of the largest motor available, the CBP560, has a peak power of up to 5 MW and a continuous output of around 2 MW. Despite this, the combined weight of the motors is relatively low.

“Using relatively simple means we have succeeded in designing a real powerhouse,” says Torsten Svensson, project manager. “A small number of components give customers a large number of variants and options to choose from.”

The unique advantages offered by the CBP Tandem units will be fully realized when they are used in especially demanding applications, such as reactors in the chemicals industry, or rubber mixers. Their impressive flexibility and ease of configuration to match torque and speed requirements are major benefits in such applications. The compact construction and high power output of this product also makes it well suited to generation systems for renewable energy, such as wind and wave power.

“We’ve built up extensive experience with Compact CBP and tandem solutions in past projects,” reports Torsten. “We utilized this experience to design this powerful and compact solution. The motor has been run for over 1,000 hours in our test lab to prove its reliability. This is a long-awaited product and we are very pleased that we are now ready to introduce it to an expectant market.”
