OTC 2011: Significant Marine & Offshore Order for USA

OTC 2011: Significant Marine & Offshore Order for USA

EBI Mechanical Systems of Houma, Louisiana ordered jacking drives for two large liftboats from Hägglunds Drives Inc

Liftboats are barges with living quarters, large open working decks, cranes, and legs at each corner. They travel to offshore locations and employ rack and pinion machinery to raise or lower the legs. This lifts the barge out of the water, preventing contact with waves and providing a stable work platform to conduct various offshore work like installing wind turbines and oil infrastructure maintenance. These highly mobile, self propelled vessels may change height or move to different locations several times a day, which demands rapid jacking. Hägglunds delivers the necessary speed and torque where alternative solutions can’t.

For the EBI order, Hägglunds is providing complete drive systems, including power units, motors, and touch screen controls. Hägglunds secured the order by combining product synergies available from Rineer, Rexroth and Hägglunds North America. Also key was Hägglunds design of the HPU and controls to meet ABS MODU Rules and obtain ABS approval. The order establishes two reference boats, enabling Hägglunds to drive further business in this exciting market.

Opportunities extend well beyond the current project. Hägglunds is pursuing higher capacity jacking drives in conjunction with EBI. Opportunities exist to encourage selection of Hägglunds drives on other machinery on these liftboats, such as thrusters and cranes. This offers commonality of drive systems and service support, along with potential sharing of power among systems.

EBI is unique in that it builds components, cranes, and complete liftboats, for both for their own Gulf of Mexico fleet and outside sale. In recent years EBI has supplied shipyards in Southeast Asia with jacking machinery and crane components for six vessels. There are needs for larger drives, and EBI is developing them with their trademark 12-tooth pinion. The higher contact ratio of 12 teeth (instead of the 7 to 9 used by others) enables the highest jacking speeds in the industry.

Hägglunds drives offered the power density issues that EBI encountered.. Motors with sufficient torque could not reach the top speeds they needed. Motors with sufficient speed could not produce the torque needed and so required higher quantities of (costly) pinions. EBI approached Hägglunds and found that its high power density enables jacking plus a 3:1 speed increase for leg movement.

International customers need worldwide support, and while EBI has that capability, it is limited. Pinions and reducers are fairly straightforward and readily swapped out for off-site service. The drives are sophisticated equipment that require technical, on-site support, which is a standard capability for Hägglunds worldwide.

Finally, the design and equipment must meet ABS requirements (and receive ABS approval). Hägglunds US is comfortable meeting these requirements (ABS is the North American equivalent of DNV). This combination of performance, worldwide support, and technical competence led EBI to choose Hägglunds for their larger drives.

"We are very confident in the ability of Hägglunds US to support our overseas projects. They have proven to be very responsive to customer requests and inquiries and have the necessary resources available to handle projects of this magnitude,“ said EBI President Ken Serigne. "We are very excited about future projects that are made possible through our joint efforts.”
