Rexroth: Maximum Investment Protection through Future-Ready Communication Strategy

Rexroth, long known as a driving force in the Sercos International Standard, is fully committed to manufacturer independent interfaces. In demonstration of that, Rexroth is increasing its EtherNet/IP activities and elevating its ODVA membership to Principal Member level. For the supplier of drive and control solutions in all technologies, customers’ long-term investment security is the key issue. “Rexroth’s commitment to base its system solutions on Sercos III’s open, Ethernet-based real-time communication remains unchanged” emphasizes Dr. Steffen Haack, Senior Vice President Sales Factory Automation in Bosch Rexroth AG’s Business Unit Industrial Applications. “By combining support of open standards such as EtherNet/IP and Sercos III Rexroth can provide its partners in business with the highest productivity and optimum investment protection.”

Open communication standards give machine manufacturers and system integrators a simple way to combine controls, drives, and peripheral devices from various suppliers, to achieve the highest productivity levels in their applications. In addition, open protocols facilitate transparent data access and enable quick integration into various applications through standardized profiles. “Our additional collaboration with ODVA on EtherNet/IP advancements is in our customers’ best interest, for it broadens the usage spectrum of our high-performance automation devices,” says Dr. Bernd-Josef Schäfer, Senior Vice President Technical Electric Drives and Controls in the Business Unit Industrial Applications. For decades, Rexroth has consistently used open protocols to safeguard long-term investment for machine manufacturers and users, and has been a member of the ODVA for many years.

“Particularly those experiences back to the time of field bus introductions have shown that open standards offer the greatest investment protection, the reason being that they are maintained and continually updated by numerous control manufacturers and device suppliers,” highlights Schäfer, pointing to Sercos International. That organization, the oldest and one of the most successful user organization with open communication standards in factory automation, celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. The hard real-time mechanisms and particularly the continually updated, standardized profiles have stood the test of time for three highly compatible generations since the 1980s, across a range of various applications. “That is why Rexroth depends on Sercos III for all drive and control technologies as the communication standard of choice for its industry-specific system solutions,” said Schäfer.
