Drive System Adds Powerful Possibilities for Machine Innovation

Bosch Rexroth IndraDrive ML

These space-saving, modular inverters can be used as a mains power inverter or as a motor inverter.

For industries ranging from offshore to plastics to metal forming, developing application-specific, modular machines is the ultimate goal. The way to achieve that goal is with optimized drive technologies. Electric solutions such as Rexroth’s IndraDrive ML can provide a valuable alternative to other technologies, especially when high power outputs are required. In this context, investment decisions must be made in favor of the appropriate technology that, in certain disciplines, is also more efficient in the target application scenario. To this end, machine and automation systems manufacturers are continually being asked to come up with alternative concepts. Application-specific and preprogrammed drive solutions are needed to minimize engineering outlay and to facilitate potential adaptations within the application itself.

Used in a variety of industries such as marine and offshore, automotive, aerospace, material handling, metal forming and metal process, to mention a few,the new IndraDrive ML from Bosch Rexroth extends its IndraDrive series into the upper power range. This modular inverter can individually power from 110kW up to 500 kW and up to 8 devices can be connected in parallel for power up to 4 MW – the only drive solution to offer megawatt power from one source.

Scalability. Flexibility.

Whether for electric, hydraulic or hybrid drive solutions, IndraDrive ML is the most scalable drive system in terms of power, performance control and connectivity. The space-saving, modular inverters can be used as a mains power inverter or as a motor inverter which minimizes the variants, simplifies handling and reduces storage costs. The universal inverters are particularly suitable for complex multi-axis applications. Drive-based Motion Logic solutions regulate synchronized movements via their own intelligence, even without higher-level control units. With a multi-Ethernet interface for all common communication protocols and one multi-encoder interface, the drives seamlessly integrate even into heterogeneous automation environments. A Sercos master can be integrated to serve as a basis for a drive integrated control system in addition to the options afforded by a BASIC control unit. The drives feature a regulated power supply for optimized energy-saving concepts and management, a high end cooling plate and best in class transistor modules. Users also benefit from intelligent features such as an integrated motion-logic for single and multi-axis control and Safety on Board technology, which includes SafeMotion and Safe Torque Off.

More power. Less space.

With IndraDrive ML, added power also brings increased efficiency. Rexroth designed the IndraDrive ML to perform within a more compact design, requiring less cabinet space. Rugged components, including a laminated power interconnect, provide durability and reliability in the toughest conditions.

Higher voltage options.

Wherever machinery and equipment requires drive power of several hundred kilowatt up to the megawatt range, the trend is toward higher supply voltages up to 690 V. The current is reduced due to the higher voltage and smaller wire sizes can be used. Most new facilities use devices with 690 V supply voltage, in particular the paper industry, metallurgy, and in marine and offshore applications, as well as energy generation. For these requirements Rexroth has developed additional variants of the IndraDrive ML Large Electric Drives with voltage ranges from 525 V to 690 V. This supplements the proven product line for supply voltages from 380 to 500 V. The space-saving, modular universal inverters generate drive power between 110 kW and 500 kW per device, and in parallel connects up to eight devices, up to four MW.

Certified for industry. Soon-to-be certified for marine.

Regardless of the supply voltage, the IndraDrive ML is certified for industrial application pursuant to CE, UL and CSA. This reduces the engineering and documentation effort for global use. All product lines are currently in the process of being approved by the ship classification authorities GL., DNV, ABS and LR so they can be “type approved“ in typical marine and offshore applications, e.g. anchor and net winches or for hoist, slewing and luffing drives for ship cranes.

Energy-efficient solutions are the best solution

Designed to meet the requirements of the target application, the IndraDrive ML always offers the best possible solution for plant operation in an energy-efficient manner – reusing energy through regeneration, storage and sharing.

A wide variety of concepts for storing energy in static or rotary configurations are available for saving energy and reducing peak loads in the power grid. Users have the option to continually monitor energy usage via Rexroth’s Open Core Interface. Plus, remote system monitoring allows for predictive maintenance that can help prevent costly machine downtime.

Further adding to its energy efficiency, the IndraDrive ML features a high-end, more effective cooling plate and best in-class transistor modules that require less energy for discharge and heat loss.

Control units cover a wide range of applications

Scalable control units and application-specific firmware options allow the IndraDrive ML to cover a wide range of standard applications up to and including high-end servo applications that require a high level of dynamic response and precision. Rexroth can supply the control unit needed for the application scenario. Standardized interfaces, comprehensive firmware functions, integrated motion logic, a host of technology functions and certified safety technology leave nothing to be desired.

Control functions offer more options for every application

With IndraMotion ML, the drive-integrated control system from Rexroth, drive functions, motion control and processing logic merge to form a modern, open automation platform for modular machine concepts. As a result, users can realize applications independently, without higher-level control.

IndraDrive ML delivers efficiency, durability, scalability, flexibility and power, creating new opportunities for application specific solutions. For more information, visit our website at: .
