Seamless automation: Intelligent motion technology from Rexroth for LabVIEW applications

Rexroth is debuting Open Core Interface for Drives on the NI Tools Network for NIWeek 2018. In addition to LabVIEW’s ability to access the IndraMotion MLC control with Open Core Interface for Controls and the IndraDrive SoftMotion Plug-in for cRIO, the OCI for Drives VI library will give LabVIEW users an easy way to add simple motion functionality to their LabVIEW applications at a much lower cost. The OCI for Drives library is compatible with all versions of IndraDrive giving you the greatest flexibility to choose a drives that meets your specific needs. It can even be used with our hydraulic positioning systems!

    Real-time motion control using the cRIO

    SoftMotion for IndraDrive

    Working together, Bosch Rexroth and National Instruments have perfectly coordinated Labview and the IndraDrive servo-drives, with CompactRIO as the master. Even better: We've put together complete drive packages for you. Simply connect the IndraDrive via "CAN over EtherCat" (CoE), download and install the "SoftMotion Drive Interface" (SDI) plug-in directly from the LabVIEW development environment – and you're done! The motor data are automatically transferred to the drive control unit via plug-and-play.

    The commissioning of the IndraDrive axes takes less than three minutes, after which you can start programming directly in LabVIEW. Simply specify the required torque in a range and we will supply the appropriate kit. By the way: We can supply customized drive solutions for torques up to 631 Nm and power ranges up to 4MW – which can also be programmed directly in LabVIEW.

    Convenient and Secure

    No more looking for motor data and manually typing it in: IndraDrive automatically recognizes the Rexroth motors via the electronic nameplate and automatically parameterizes the motor data and encoder data. For the initial commissioning of the IndraDrive drives, all that's needed is to enter a few application-specific values – it takes no more than three minutes. Then transfer all the application-specific data by simply re-plugging the operating panel for convenient and secure serial commissioning.

    Use the IndraDrive Safety on Board option. This simplifies standardized safety circuits by using certified safety functions. Choose the "safe torque off" (STO) and the "safe brake control" (SBC) options. These let the drives achieve Cat 4 PL e in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1 and SIL 3 in accordance with EN 62061.

    Bosch Rexroth makes it easier to create complex multi-axis applications in LabVIEW with the IndraMotion MLC motion logic system. Here, the programming of movements is also performed solely via LabVIEW – without a single line of PLC code.

    All of this is enabled by Open Core Engineering. This award-winning solution makes it possible to seamlessly integrate all drive and control functionalities into the LabVIEW environment. This helps to increase the efficiency and accelerates the implementation of individually projected testing and measuring machines. A specific library, which can be imported into LabVIEW, enables engineers to directly access the control functionalities of IndraMotion MLC systems. It provides the LabVIEW programmer with more than 550 virtual instruments in his familiar software environment.

    The Open Core Interface library gives the LabVIEW program direct access to the motion kernel commands on the MLC, without the need for PLC code. This allows commands to be sent to the motion control on the MLC directly and then the MLC closes the control loops on the control system according to those commands, providing high precision movement for LabVIEW applications. Instead of commanding the individual servos positions on a robot kinematic, as an example, LabVIEW sends the XYZ coordinates of the tool path and the MLC resolves the position internally.

    Rexroth makes it easy to integrate precision motion control into your LabVIEW application. With the OCI for Drive library, the LabVIEW programmer can access all the features of the IndraDrive from within his own LabVIEW development environment. This gives the user access to high level control that is decentralized on the IndraDrive itself, including compensation features such as backlash and torque cogging compensation as well as diagnostic information like the on-board Oscilloscope. These tools deliver the industry’s best solutions for servo driven motion control.

    Open Core Interface for Drives gives LabVIEW applications direct access to all drive parameters – for all IndraDrive drives, regardless of the form factor. The LabVIEW VI library uses the Sercos Internet protocol (S/IP) which facilitates standardized network communication at the production level. From 100 W to 4 MW, whether centralized or decentralized, the OCI library works the same for all IndraDrive products. This provides the greatest flexibility in standardizing a programming interface while providing access to the complete power range of electric drives.

    The OCI for Drives library is supported by our hydraulic positioning products as well, which uses the same firmware interface as the electric drives. This further extends the power range into hydraulic control to meet power requirements that electric motors cannot reach.

    When used in conjunction with Rexroth linear products, a complete linear motion drive system can be developed to provide both the linear mechanics and electric control – a complete solution!
