New gearbox platform from Rexroth reduces Cost of Energy

Rexroth has developed a gearbox platform which is consistently oriented towards reducing the Cost of Energy (CoE) and increasing reliability at every stage of development. The company can offer turbine manufacturers over 30 years of experience in the design of wind turbine drive trains.

Rexroth has developed a new gearbox platform for turbine manufacturers with a power range of 3 MW to 4.5 MW. With a compact gearbox consisting of two planetary gear stages and a helical gear stage, the company's consistent aim in developing the gearbox concept was to reduce the CoE and increase reliability.

The market validation of the entire platform is based on an extensive proprietary test program developed by Rexroth. This considerably reduces the work involved in testing and the costs for the turbine manufacturer. The modular concept allows rapid adaptation to customer-specific requirements, thus shortening the time-to-market. Rexroth has also considerably standardized the parts, which means, among other things, that they are available more quickly.

Structural changes also result in additional benefits: The planet wheel takes on the function of the outer ring of the planetary bearing and thus avoids bearing damage by a conventional rotating outer ring. The optimized tooth meshing sequence ensures the gearbox is quiet when running and allows improved noise characteristics. Optimized tooth flank roughness depths reduce the risk of micropitting.

When designing the gearbox, Rexroth uses multi-body simulation for entire drive trains and considers the dynamics of the system as a whole. The latest calculation methods to increase reliability in the automotive industry are incorporated into development and production.
