BlueHydraulics from Rexroth offers technologically leading, intelligent solutions which make commercial vehicles more efficient and environmentally friendly

The IAA Commercial Vehicles is the leading global trade show for mobility, transport, and logistics – and represents a mandatory presence by Bosch Rexroth. This year the company is presenting BlueHydraulics systems and products in Hanover, with a strong focus on energy efficiency and environmental protection. Among the certified Rexroth systems and products are the hydraulic hybrid drive HRB, the hydrostatic fan drives, the SILENCE PLUS external gear pumps, and the generator drives for refrigerated vehicles.

With BlueHydraulics, Rexroth has set the goal of making an important contribution to greater energy efficiency and reducing CO2 and harmful emissions. The task is to provide optimal assistance to manufacturers of commercial vehicles and mobile working machines in meeting the strict exhaust emission limits according to Euro 6 and TIER 4 final. BlueHydraulics stands for a wide spectrum of lasting solutions for mobile applications and is, at the same time, a seal of approval for efficiency-optimized components, innovative function modules, and efficiently networked system solutions – all with the goal of saving energy, increasing efficiency, and reducing emissions.

HRB reduces fuel consumption, brake wear, and emissions

One of the exhibit highlights from the BlueHydraulics portfolio is the hydraulic hybrid. HRB technology from Rexroth is designed for use in heavy vehicles that need to start and stop frequently, such as refuse trucks and heavy delivery vehicles. The principle of HRB is as simple as it is revolutionary: instead of wasting the kinetic energy from braking as useless heat, it is converted into hydraulic energy and stored in special hydraulic pressure vessels. The next time acceleration is demanded, the stored energy is fed back to the drive train.

HRB reduces fuel consumption and thereby the CO2 emissions by up to 25 percent, and brake wear is reduced by up to 50 percent. This protects the environment and reduces operating costs. Vehicles with the hydraulic hybrid drive from Rexroth are already in use in over ten cities in Europe and North America, mainly at municipal and private entities for waste collection. The system will go into series production following the IAA.

Lower fuel consumption and harmful emissions using hydrostatic fan drives

Up to five percent fuel savings are achieved using the electronically controlled hydrostatic fan drive from Rexroth. The BlueHydraulics system keeps the combustion engine at optimal operating temperature regardless of engine speed. Buses and trucks, as well as construction, agricultural, and forestry machines, are then able to meet the strict emissions regulations for exhaust gas limits. At IAA Commercial Vehicles, Rexroth will present the complete fan drive solution using an axial piston variable speed pump, plastic and steel tank, external gear motor, valve technology, sensors, as well as mobile electronics. The A10VNO28 and A10VNO45 variable pumps feature high power density for providing the required fan output on demand. In addition, both A10VNO pumps are equipped with electronically controlled pressure regulation, permitting a reduction in the minimum fan speed. This helps to prevent over-cooling when cold starting the vehicle.

SILENCE PLUS External Gear Pump

BlueHydraulics stands not only for reduced energy consumption, but also less noise emission. With their SILENCE PLUS external gear pump, Rexroth introduces a new, quieter generation of external gear pumps. The new pump

not only has a more pleasant, deeper sound than previous external gear pumps. Measurements showed a reduction of noise level by an average of 15 dB(A) and a flow pulsation lowered by 75 percent. The new, quiet SILENCE PLUS is used as an auxiliary steering pump in buses and as a hydraulic pump in tail lifts and offers great benefits in applications with electric motor drives such as forklifts, working platforms, and industrial power units.

Versatile solutions for the commercial vehicle sector

The company will also be presenting other hydraulic and electrohydraulic drive and control solutions for the entire applications range in the commercial vehicle sector. This includes the A18VO EP variable pump, a high-pressure version of the A17VO, equipped with electro-proportional swivel angle adjustment. The pump is characterized, above all, by its high power density. Also on display will be the AA2FM fixed displacement motor with speed sensor, used in generator drives on refrigerated trucks. The AA2FM variant for the drum drive in concrete mixers also includes a built-in flushing valve. Also featured at Rexroth’s IAA exhibit are improved, complete, system solutions for refrigerated trucks, tail lifts, crane and mast superstructures, roll-off tippers and skip loaders, truck-based road sweepers and concrete mixers.

Innovations and improved functionality also qualify existing Rexroth products for the BlueHydraulics label. Series 40 of the A4VG axial piston variable pump, for example, offers significantly greater performance thanks to higher pressures and speeds. Combined with the A6VM axial piston variable motor Series 71, the A4VG comprises the Rexroth high-performance travel drive. This system provides up to 15 percent greater efficiency in the travel drive.

New BODAS controller: Efficient implementation of intelligent and sophisticated hydraulic controls

Efficiency-optimized hydraulic components can only really exploit their savings potential when they are controlled on-demand by intelligent software. Here Rexroth offers the proven BODAS controllers: hydraulic, electronic and applications software from a single source and all matched to each other. New in the Series 30 is the BODAS RC28-14/30 controller, which offers not only high computing power and numerous in- and outputs, but also represents the ideal basis for safety-relevant applications. BODAS RC28-14/30 is a freely programmable, centralized controller for hydrostatic travel drives, implement hydraulics and electrical ancillary functions in construction and agricultural machinery, as well as municipal and commercial vehicles. A 32-bit TriCore processor ensures optimal computing power. A sample will be on display at the exhibition. The official start of series production is January 2011.
