Knowledge – the decisive competitive advantage

On the safe side with Rexroth

On the safe side with Rexroth: training, e-learning and a manual provide associates with fundamental expert knowledge regarding standard-conforming machine safety.

Worldwide, the requirements on machine safety are increasing and are being continuously harmonized. Fundamental standards such as ISO 13849 for functional safety and legal requirements such as the EU's Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC have long influenced the special safety concepts in individual industries and areas of application – and thus also the access of machines to the various markets. To teach associates what they must observe regarding standard-conforming machine safety, Rexroth offers, under the umbrella of the Drive & Control Academy, training programs especially tailored to their needs.

Lohr. Rexroth is one of the world’s leading specialists in drive and control technology and possesses comprehensive competence in functional safety at all levels of automation and technologies with standard-conforming products. The spectrum ranges from components to system solutions including everything from software to practical training and e-learning modules. Rexroth's technology-specific or more general continuing education offering provides qualifying associates with up-to-date knowledge in the topics of the Machine Directive, risk assessment and evaluation, project planning and operation of machine controls.

Training on safety technology

The training program for functional safety consists of both fundamental basic training and more comprehensive specialized training. In the training program professional trainers convey the skills required to implement the relevant standards for machine safety and the Machine Directive. The basic training is geared mainly toward specialized employees who have to assess and ensure the functional safety of all aspects of machines. At the end of the training participants can take an optional final exam. After successfully passing of the exam, the participant receives the certification "Certified expert – functional safety according to EN ISO 13849“ from TÜV NORD CERT GmbH, Bosch Rexroth and SICK. The specialized training is the best choice for associates who require a more in depth knowledge in certain areas. The topics include, among others, "Risk assessment and mitigation according to ISO 12100“, "Project planning of the safety control SafeLogic compact“ and "Practical training on assessment of functional safety with Sistema“.

E-learning modules for functional safety

Learning which is available at any time and in any location and with the possibility for unlimited repetition; learning at a speed suited to each individual and interactive learning content – these are the greatest advantages of independent computer-based learning. In the e-learning modules eFSI for functional safety, Rexroth provides the learning topics "Basics of machine safety" and "10 Steps to performance level” through multimedia applications, which provide the most up-to-date information. In this way developers, engineers, planners and mechanical engineering safety officers learn not only about the Machine Directive and the relevant standards, but also receive fundamental knowledge regarding functional safety according to ISO 13849.

Manual safety technology "10 Steps to performance level”

The manual for the implementation of functional safety according to ISO 13849 is an indispensable tool for the construction of safe machines. This reference guide helps developers and engineers considerably reduce their efforts in the design of safe machine controls. Among other topics, it provides a general overview of the international and European directives as well as national laws and also shows the scope and the requirements of the EU Machine Directive. In addition to this the users receive information on how the different standards for the functional safety of machines interrelate and when to apply which standard. In developing this safety manual, it was very important to the experts to not only provide existing knowledge from standards and directives, but also to translate it into practical expert knowledge based on clear application examples.
