6,000 meters under the sea

The test aggregate

The test aggregate demonstrates suitability of hydraulic components for deep-sea applications up to a depth of 6,000 meter.

The world-wide demand for oil, natural gas and minerals is increasing. In the search of new deposits companies advance to ever larger depths. Their development requires technical solutions that make it possible to extract the resources from great depths and in the associated rough environmental conditions. To this end, Rexroth has adopted numerous hydraulic components and tested them for suitability for deep-sea applications. These modifications ensure stability and reliability in practice, as well as a long service life.

To prepare companies for deep sea applications, Rexroth adapted numerous standard components to fit the special requirements for the rough conditions in deep-sea applications. The user can chose from different possible approaches for the pressure compensation that is necessary due to the high environmental pressure: the local pressure compensation is used where no differential volumes occur, e.g. hollow parts with no consumer connected. A pressure enclosure is sufficient in case of small volumes such as sensors. On the other hand, a central pressure compensation is used where several consumers are interconnected.

Rexroth developed an underwater power unit to test the components for deep-sea applications. It is equipped with a water-proof motor pump assembly that can drive an axial piston motor and hydraulic cylinders via an encapsulated valve control. Hydraulic components and electronic parts are tested close to reality under deep sea conditions at up to 600 bar water pressure in an underwater test chamber, that equals a water column of 6 kilometers.
