Bosch Rexroth's Strong Growth Sets New Sales Record

Development of mechanical engineering sector dampens expectations for 2012

  • Sales up by more than 27 percent to EUR 6.4 billion
  • Almost 3,500 additional jobs created
  • Global research and development network extended
  • Expansion in all business sectors and regions

Lohr/Hanover – Bosch Rexroth AG surpassed its growth targets for 2011. The global supplier in the mechanical and plant engineering sector achieved sales of EUR 6.443 billion in the last financial year. This represents a rise of 27.2 percent on 2010 and is the highest sales figure in the company's history. "The 2011 financial year proves that Bosch Rexroth moved in the right direction with its strategic reorganization in 2010. We have made significant gains in all regions and business units," reported Dr. Karl Tragl, Chairman of the Executive Board at Bosch Rexroth AG, during the annual press conference at the Hanover Trade Fair.

At the end of the year, incoming orders stood at EUR 7.2 billion, a further 22 percent increase on the previous year's excellent figures. As a result, Bosch Rexroth has started 2012 with an extremely healthy order book. Nevertheless, the company is only cautiously optimistic about the current financial year. This is because of the moderate development of the mechanical and plant engineering sector in Germany in the first quarter of 2012, and the slowdown in growth in China. "We expect to see growth again in Germany in the second half of the year," Tragl said. Because China has developed into the world's largest market for mechanical and plant engineering in recent years, even slightly lower growth rates than before still offer considerable opportunities for increased sales in the region. Further positive impetus is coming from Brazil, Russia and India, as well as from an economic recovery in the USA. "In the current situation, all our forecasts suggest that Bosch Rexroth will continue its growth of recent years in 2012, even if we fall short of the 2011 rate," said Tragl.

Further Expansion of Value-Adding Activities in Growth Regions

In 2011, Bosch Rexroth was able to make significant gains in every region of the triad. In Germany, the boom in the mechanical engineering sector brought about an almost 25 percent increase in sales. Outside Germany, the company's sales in the rest of Europe rose by more than 33 percent. In the Asia Pacific region, Bosch Rexroth managed to continue the dynamic growth of previous years, with a rise of more than 26 percent. In India, sales even rose by more than 34 percent in 2011, meaning that the volume of business in the country has almost tripled since 2005. In China, the EUR 1 billion threshold was almost reached for the first time, and North and South America also contributed to the company's success, with an increase of more than 20 percent in sales.

"We were only able to achieve this growth because we retained our core team during the crisis and we invested huge amounts in additional capacity and associates in recent years," Tragl explained. Bosch Rexroth invested worldwide in the expansion of production and development during 2011 – the company doubled its capacity in Wujin in China, while construction of a new, larger plant began at Ahmedabad in India. The purchase of an additional building doubled Bosch Rexroth's production area at the Fountain Inn plant in South Carolina, USA. Due to the positive business performance, the number of associates worldwide also increased by almost 3,500 to more than 38,000 by the end of the year. The biggest rise was seen in Germany, where 1,490 new associates were taken on. There was also another significant rise in the Asia Pacific growth region, where Bosch Rexroth now employs 1,080 more associates than a year ago. Outside Germany, the company took on an additional 588 associates in Europe, while 325 new jobs were created in North and South America.

Growth in all Company Areas

All three company areas contributed to the company's growth, with the Business Unit Mobile Applications making the biggest contribution and building on its position as the global market leader. Industrial Applications achieved significant advances in almost all mechanical and plant engineering sectors, and Renewable Energies expanded its range of products related to gearbox and drive solutions for wind energy plants. New services such as remote monitoring were introduced, with the aim of ensuring that stoppages can be prevented.

In terms of regions, 2011 saw a continued shift in economic significance towards Asia and South America. Bosch Rexroth has consistently expanded its value-adding activities in these regions, opening up additional potential. "We supply growth markets and sectors with a huge range of products and solutions," Tragl explained. The company offers numerous system solutions that enable manufacturers of mobile machinery to comply with more stringent exhaust emission limits worldwide. "The time from the initial idea to the delivery of the machine is a critical factor in making decisions to purchase. Engineering is where the biggest streamlining potential can be found," Tragl emphasized. This is why Bosch Rexroth has been focusing its research and development efforts on the electrification of all drive technologies and the transfer of functions into software. To help achieve this, the Business Unit Industrial Applications has doubled its number of software and electronics developers. The new development engineers will work in Germany, China, India and Slovenia.

Regionally Tailored Innovations Tap Into New Market Segments

Bosch Rexroth has spent a total of over EUR 312 million on research and development. At the same time, the company is also building up its international R&D network, particularly in the growth regions. Innovations tailored to regional requirements are being developed locally, and this is bringing increasing success in tapping into new market segments. For example, Chinese Rexroth engineers have created an energy-saving drive system for hydraulic units. The new system is being used locally in plastics machines, for example. The company was also one of the development partners involved in the world's largest piece of marine lifting equipment — a special ship that can lift entire offshore platforms and transport them to land, where they can be safely dismantled.

Bosch Rexroth AG is one of the world’s leading specialists in the field of drive and control technologies. Under the Rexroth brand name, the company supplies more than 500,000 customers with tailored solutions for driving, controlling, and moving. Bosch Rexroth is a partner for Mobile Applications, Machinery Applications and Engineering, Factory Automation and Renewable Energies.
