Machine Safety: EN 954 Presumption of Conformity Expires at the End of 2011

The extended EN 954-1 presumption of conformity for special applications in accordance with the European Machinery Directive finally expires at the end of 2011. As a result, the ISO 13849-1/-2 or IEC 62061 methodology must now also be applied to all special machines in circulation in the European Union. Machine manufacturers must verify and document that they have conformed to this standard in their machine control systems. Furthermore, an ever-increasing number of sales markets have followed suit and adopted ISO 13849. The safety experts at Bosch Rexroth highlight the fact that in Brazil, for example, the NR12 machine safety standard has been used since the end of 2010 to regulate the requirements for ensuring safe machine operation in accordance with the European Machinery Directive. This standard applies to both new and already installed machines that have to be retrofitted to some extent.

For years, Bosch Rexroth has provided support to machine manufacturers from all branches of industry in the implementation of this cross-technology standard for ensuring functional safety. Bosch Rexroth also provides services, such as training sessions and consultations, on the subject of standardized safety concepts in Europe and in the international markets.
