The result of successful partnerships

The press’ powerful drive unit

The press’ powerful drive unit is equipped with 13 Bosch Rexroth A4VSO axial piston variable displacement pumps.

One of the world’s most powerful extrusion presses with drive technology from Rexroth

Extrusion presses offer the advantage of a high forming rate for complex shapes or materials that are difficult to form. In early May, SMS Meer GmbH presented one of the world’s most powerful extrusion presses in Mönchengladbach, Germany. Rexroth provided engineering and hydraulics support to help meet the machine’s extreme demands.

Machinery and equipment manufacturer SMS Meer produced a powerful light alloy extrusion press at their company headquarters in Mönchengladbach, Germany. With a press capacity of 150 MN, it is one of the world’s most powerful extrusion and tube presses of its kind. It was presented to the trade public at a symposium hosted by SMS Meer in early May. The press will enable the future production of profiles up to 60 meters long with a diameter up to 70 millimeters.

Such challenges can only be met with strong partnerships between specialists. Rexroth supplied its expertise in comprehensive hydraulic system solutions during the use of simulation programs and the entire process, ranging from the concept and design phase, to engineering, and through to delivery and assembly.

The plant is equipped with hydraulics from Rexroth that support the extrusion press drive with their power density, lack of maintenance, and high degree of availability.

The extrusion press’ hydraulic system works with two hydraulic circuits. Several pumps drive the recipient and press cylinder via a displacement regulator. Rexroth proportional and servo valves control all other axes using flow control throttles.

Rexroth specially produced the 52,000-liter tank and cooling circuit with a 650-kW cooling capacity for the 40-meter plant.

The performance spectrum includes the complete drive unit with 13 A4VSO axial piston variable displacement pumps with servo-hydraulic regulation. They provide the flow rate with up to 310 bar on an as-needed basis and without any disruptive pressure spikes.

Particularly large tube diameters are needed for the plant’s immense performance data. The spectrum of tubes Rexroth uses range from diameters of 273 mm and tube thicknesses of 55 mm for high pressures to diameters of 711 mm and tube thicknesses of 8.8 mm for low pressures, all of which adhere to the respective quality standards stipulated by SMS Meer, Lloyds, DNV, BV, GL, and ABS.

Machine manufacturers and end customers alike benefit from Rexroth’s expertise throughout the plant’s entire life cycle, whether during the design and realization phase, for operational support, or when it comes to necessary modernization measures. Global partners with application experience and the right tools are also on hand to support the entire organization.
