Rexroth IndraMotion MLC integrates fluid technology and hydraulic know-how

With the new version of the IndraMotion MLC, Rexroth is presenting an open motion logic system for easy automation of hydraulic, electric and hybrid drives. It uses fully-open standards such as SERCOS III for Ethernet-based real-time communication and supports both centralized and decentralized architectures. At the same time, a number of hydraulic controllers have now already been integrated into the system. The scalable hardware allows for a modular increase in the number of hydraulic drives by sets of four, for a total of up to 64 axes per unit. However, the number of axes can be increased almost ad infinitum through cross-communication.

The IndraMotion MLC system integrates an open PLC under IEC 61131-3 with a powerful motion control system. It uses integrated hydraulic controllers to separate the drive physics from the automation level. This simplifies the design and start-up, operation and diagnosis of highly productive machine concepts. Users start the electric, hydraulic and hybrid drives up comfortably using only one engineering tool - IndraWorks. A high-speed I/O module designed specifically for hydraulic standards records all important process parameters.

The use of the Ethernet-based real-time communication system SERCOS III ensures the necessary synchronous communication between controller, drives and I/O, allowing the system to control all drives in a highly dynamic manner, in both centralized and decentralized concepts. For non-real-time-critical communication tasks the user can use standard field buses and Ethernet protocols.

IndraMotion MLC makes full use of the benefits of hydraulics with pre-programmed application know-how. Best-in-class controllers for positioning, synchronization, force, alternating force/position control as well as position-related braking cover all necessary hydraulic functions. The synchronization control includes all basic principles as well as various active and passive variants. The only thing the user has to do is choose the corresponding algorithm. At the same time, the control’s open design provides machine manufacturers with a high degree of freedom to implement their control know-how such as target value generation or individual controller models.

In addition to the programming languages defined in IEC 61131-3, Rexroth's sequential programming offers a comfortable way of realizing cyclical and sequential tasks within a common language, while preserving the strict separation of PLC and motion control tasks. The sequential programming model developed by Rexroth for electro-hydraulic system solutions makes even complex projects transparent. This tool allows programmers to realize comprehensive applications such as die cushions for deep drawing presses quickly and easily.

Moreover, IndraMotion MLC comes with an integrated diagnostic tool "WinView", which was developed by Rexroth to simplify trouble shooting and process optimization. The tool records all PLC and process variables in real-time in up to 100 channels, and continuously stores this data on a PC also for long-term purposes. This makes analyzing sporadic equipment failures easier and allows for operations to resume more quickly after a disruption.

Rexroth also offers the option of adding I/O modules to the control's compact controller-based hardware. These I/O modules allow for the number of hydraulic drives in centralized concepts to be increased by sets of four, and they fulfill all hydraulics-specific requirements, such as short-circuit protection and overload capacity. In addition, they also sense position, pressure, and control the proportional valves. IndraMotion MLC supports up to 32 axes with centralized drive control, or up to 64 axes with decentralized drive control.
