Uniform Look and Feel

Rexroth's Marex OS II

Proven technology with a modern design – Rexroth's Marex OS II control as an integrated unit plate

System suppliers increase ease of use on the bridge

For the SMM, Rexroth is introducing new bridge plates with a consistent operating concept, in cooperation with the companies Raytheon Anschütz and EMRI. The initial impulse was a customer request from a renowned yacht builder: the most important systems in ship operation should have a uniform appearance. Together with its project partners, Rexroth implemented this request and now offers yacht builders remote engine control, a DP system, as well navigation and thruster control, all in the same design.

With the increasing complexity of monitoring and control elements on ship bridges, it is important that the ship captain is able to maintain an overview. A clear, uniform design in relation to colors, lettering and lighting can support this requirement.

What is practically a given in the automotive industry still has not made its way into the mainstream of marine technology. Nonetheless, the trend toward standardized bridge design meanwhile is recognizable not only on ships and platforms in the offshore area but also in yacht building. The problem up to now has been that the individual bridge components usually come from various specialty suppliers or system suppliers. In addition, the ships are custom built for their owners, and the classification societies also influence the operating concepts. For new ships, this often becomes an issue of priorities: whether to select a perfectly matched, one-of-a-kind piece or a more economical “ready made” product that poses problems when it comes to integration.

Use of standard components

Rexroth provides an elegant solution with the modular Marex OS II remote control. The control units are available in the current clean design that enables easy integration from an optical aspect. This standard component guarantees simple maintenance and assembly in conjunction with virtually limitless design options for the surroundings. The operating and display strips of the Marex OS II can be installed under existing structures. The modular concept provides a wide range of options for arranging displays. The main task thus becomes how to structure the visible portion of the control unit: the unit plates are designed according to proprietors’ wishes and the time-tested elements retain their place.

System solution and years of experience

With this system solution, Rexroth fulfills all customer requirements for operating comfort and safety, as well as for the appearance of the unit plates. An additional bonus of the Rexroth control is the long-term experience of the automation supplier in planning and classifying remote control systems.
