High-precision observatory

In the Altay mountain range the Russian Federal Space Agency has constructed an observatory with a high-precision laser telescope. It precisely monitors the flight paths of objects such as meteors or satellites in outer space. The three-meter large reflector is located under a three-part folding roof that weighs 150 tons. Thanks to hydraulic drives that were specifically developed for this purpose, it can be opened, closed and exactly aligned with positioning accurate to 0.3 millimeters. The components that are used, such as hydraulic cylinders and proportional valves, are resistant to harsh mountain conditions such as strong wind, snow, ice or seismic activity.
