IndraMotion MLC: More Power for Networked Printing and Processing Operations

Highly networked and with enough reserves for the shortest cycle times in the realm of PLC and motion control: Performance-enhanced hardware for motion-logic systems from Rexroth.

Rexroth's new hardware platform meets the requirements for greater information sharing and shorter cycle times

Shorter changeover times for smaller runs, faster format changes and precise register control: In addition to these traditional challenges involved in the automation of print and processing machines, data needs to be increasingly shared with other machines and higher-level systems. To prevent a negative impact on automation caused by networking, Rexroth has significantly increased the performance of the IndraMotion MLC control hardware. The shortest possible PLC and motion cycle times are thus possible to achieve higher productivity – even with 100% networking.

The new embedded control hardware IndraControl XM fulfills the increased demands with greater processing power than ever before. In addition, it offers modular expansion options for more flexibility when it comes to automation. Machine manufacturers can thus combine the control, for example, with IndraControl S20 I/O modules in the same form factor. The local connection of the periphery ensures high-performance and synchronous I/O print data processing.

A new high-performance version of IndraMotion MLC, based on industrial PC hardware, allows for the synchronization of up to 99 axes in demanding real time. In addition, a Windows 7 operating system is also available on the IPC. Thus, machine manufacturers can install high-performance software tools for visualization, data processing, analysis, or reporting on the same hardware.

Open standards for data exchange

IndraMotion MLC from Rexroth combines motion and logic control with predefined, typical printing technology functions, such as register control or cascaded web tension control. Rexroth always utilizes multi-vendor standards whenever possible and supports all conventional real-time Ethernet protocols. There are also open standards in use such as OPC UA for machine-to-machine communication. By extending the OPC UA information model IndraMotion MLC improves the exchange of data between automation components from different manufacturers and provides transparent access to all higher-level functions of the system. Thus, the controls exchange information horizontally with other processing systems. The Open Core Interface software solution from Rexroth enables functions that were written in high-level languages to have direct access to the IndraMotion MLC core. Together with the WebConnector, vertical networking of printing machines with the virtual world of the Internet can be easily implemented.

Use data created once multiple times

With the IndraWorks engineering environment, Rexroth covers all phases of PLC-based engineering. Pre-prepared, typical printing solutions, and function toolkits serve to accelerate the engineering. The high-performance script "Automation Interface" thereby automates the carrying out of recurring engineering activities that previously had to be carried out by hand. The ECAD Data Interface eliminates the need to include the control cabinet in the planning phase, which was, until now, tediously carried out by the cabinet manufacturer and then during commissioning for the programming and documentation. IndraWorks reutilizes the circuit diagram data created in EPLAN Electric P8 directly in the PLC engineering. In addition to PLC automation, functions in many high-level languages in the world of IT can be programmed and apps for popular operating systems created using the Open Core Interface. This enables users to directly access, commission, use or diagnose Rexroth control systems in a familiar operating environment using their smartphones or tablet PCs.
