Maximum safety

Bosch Rexroth solutions on the roll mills

The new Bosch Rexroth solutions on the roll mills of the Hutchinson Group provide enhanced safety for the operators.

Outstanding function of Bosch Rexroth safety solution for roll mills,in the rubber industry, has once again been verified

Hägglunds drive systems, today supplied from Bosch Rexroth, has for more than 15 years been supplied to roll mills in the rubber production sites of the Hutchinson group. Recently the Hutchinson subsidiary Le Joint Français in Saint-Brieuc, France, acknowledged Bosch Rexroth as an expert authority for its drive and control solutions by ordering a Hägglunds drive system when upgrading one of their roll mills. The excellent performance of the safe stop function, in the supplied system, was also verified once again and exceeded the expectations of Le Joint Français.

For their retrofit overhaul of a roll mill for rubber production, the Hutchinson Group subsidiary, Le Joint Français, turned to the expertise of Bosch Rexroth. The upgrade involved replacing an electro-mechanical drive with a Hägglunds hydraulic direct drive transmission.

The Hägglunds drive solution offered fully variable speed to the roll mill and in addition to that, the system included also the, by regulations needed, safe stop function for the maximum safety of the personnel. Roll mills have to be able to immediately stop in case for an emergency. The safety requirements from Le Joint Français exceeded those of the current European standard, EN1417, and required it to stop within a rotation angle of less than 30°.

The performance of the safe stop function was checked during commissioning of the equipment confirming an safe stop within a rotation angle of approximately 3°. This performance greatly exceeded the target stipulated by Le Joint Français and showing what standards in terms of safety that can be reached. According to the current standard a machine has to stop over an angle smaller than 1 radian, which is about 57° and in this case equivalent to approximately 350mm. The installed new Hägglunds drive system achieved stopping within 3° which is equivalent to only about 18mm.

Market leading and experienced companies, like Bosch Rexroth, are focusing on achieving gains in performance and productivity in a wide range. The solution and know how in engineering, supplied here, have demonstrated high values in a field which is essential for industrial operations – safety.

For upgrading of the rubber roll mill, Bosch Rexroth proposed a turnkey solution consisting of Hägglunds high-torque, low-speed hydraulic motors, safe stop valves, mounting accessories and a hydraulic drive unit but also assistance in assembly and commissioning. In order to limit production downtime, the overhaul work only took a week to complete.
