ASME certification opens up new territories for Bosch Rexroth

Bosch Rexroth ASME certification

Boxtel plant in the Netherlands receives U, U2 and U3 rating for hydraulic accumulators

  • Highest level of ASME certification for hydraulic piston accumulators
  • ASME certification covering U, U2 and U3
  • One of the very few hydraulic systems manufacturers to be certified

In December 2016 Bosch Rexroth, the leading company in drive and control solutions, gained the highest level of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) certification for its hydraulic piston accumulators. Covering U, U2 and U3 Stamps, it means Bosch Rexroth is one of few companies in the world capable of providing this certification for its hydraulic accumulators.

ASME Certification is a growing requirement for all pressure vessels, acting as a measure of quality and safety. ASME U represents certification of equipment up to 200 bar pressure, U2 up to 685 bar, while the highest level U3 is for unlimited pressure usually for special gas and high pressure applications. Accumulators and piston accumulators can fall into any category.

At the Bosch Rexroth manufacturing plant in Boxtel, the Netherlands, a new process for certification was implemented over the course of 2016 with the help of CIS GmbH (Consulting Inspection Services). Due to an already installed certification process e.g. Lloyds, DNV, CE, it involved minor modifications to the manufacturing process, design and materials used in accumulator production to bring them in line with ASME requirements. The final audit was carried out by an ASME team, involving an examination of the processes and a stress demonstration of an actual component.

By attaining ASME Certification, Bosch Rexroth can support customers requesting pressure vessels with this requirement. This is increasingly the case in the US, as well as Canadian and South Korean markets. Bosch Rexroth becomes one of only 30 companies worldwide, and the only company in the Netherlands to offer this qualification. More importantly, Bosch Rexroth is one of the few manufacturers of hydraulic systems in this elite group.

“Ensuring our manufacturing process conforms to the ASME requirements is an example of our commitment to developing the market and investing in the future,” said Michiel Kuijper, Project & Order Manager Cylinders. “Offering this qualification for hydraulic piston accumulators puts us in a very strong position globally. We can support all industrial applications needing large and powerful hydraulic accumulators.”

Economical, precise, safe, and energy efficient: drive and control technology from Bosch Rexroth moves machines and systems of any size. The company bundles global application experience in the market segments of Mobile Applications, Machinery Applications and Engineering, and Factory Automation to develop innovative components as well as tailored system solutions and services. Bosch Rexroth offers its customers hydraulics, electric drives and controls, gear technology, and linear motion and assembly technology all from one source. With locations in over 80 countries, more than 31,100 associates generated sales revenue of approximately 5.4 billion euros in 2015.

Intelligent hydraulics for increased availability

Connected hydraulics increase the availability of machinery and plants through condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. For this purpose, Rexroth offers scalable solutions, from individual units with local evaluation to the complete, cloud-based monitoring of large plants. Sensors measure all relevant operating conditions and software detects wear before it leads to failure. Retrofitting kits also economically integrate already installed plants into these concepts.

Linear motion, short time to market

Stand-alone linear axes are the trend. The combination of electrical drive unit and mechanical or hydraulic cylinder reduces installation space and engineering time and combines our specific professional knowledge in one system. With ready-to-mount and i4.0-enabled solution packages, Bosch Rexroth is in line with the current market requirements regarding electrification, digitalization and monitoring as well as condition-based maintenance. The uniform control and drive concept which is used in the different technologies serves as a basis for a short time to market and the economical implementation of hybrid solutions.
