More data for more productive packaging machines

The IoT Gateway from Rexroth creates transparency for existing and new packaging machines and thus establishes the information base for improved system efficiency and more flexible processes.

The packaging industry is always under time, cost and flexibility pressure. System operators must continue to optimize complex processes, reduce standstill and service periods, accelerate retrofitting and produce increasingly smaller batches. All of this can only be achieved with a sufficient data base. With the IoT Gateway, Rexroth offers an easy-to-configure solution for new and existing machines that collects sensor and machine data without intervention in the available automation and transmits it to higher systems for analysis and evaluation.

To meet the increasing requirements up to batch sizes one for individual packaging, users must connect their processes beyond company borders and establish flexible value networks from reliable machines and lines. However, the typical machine life cycle of fifteen years or more opposes a comprehensive investment in replacement. In addition to classic retrofitting of existing drive and control technology, there is a higher demand for more information from existing systems.

Efficient IoT connection for new and existing systems

With the IoT Gateway from Rexroth, new and existing systems can be connected quickly and easily to the industrial Internet of Things and Services (IoT). Using the dashboard, the intuitive controllable web-based interface of the IoT Gateway, the machine operator only selects the parameter to be monitored and the appropriate sensors and establishes the connection. This connected system consisting of sensors, software and industrial hardware compatible with IoT can be quickly and easily set up, operated and managed. If necessary, the user can also read existing controls without intervention in the original control project, regardless of the manufacturer.

Finally, it is only necessary to define which information is processed and sent to the superposed systems for monitoring and evaluation. It could be MES, MDE / BDE systems, or IoT cloud platforms, from Bosch, Oracle or Microsoft. As an attractive complete solution from a single source, a starter kit is also offered in combination with the Production Performance Manager (PPM) analysis and evaluation platform from Bosch Software Innovations.

Typical applications in the packaging industry

One example of an attractive application scenario for the IoT Gateway is the condition-based maintenance of old existing systems with a vertical shaft in the drive train. Their protracted malfunction can be detected with additional vibration and temperature sensors so that the supporting components can be replaced on schedule.

Another application example is the analysis of environmental influences on the packaging material or the product using an additional sensor. Temperature and humidity results enable the machine to be adaptively adjusted to the current status of the package.

At interpack 2017, Bosch Rexroth will use the IoT Gateway to visualize the statuses of a total of five exhibition machines with a live demo. Visitors can experience this, among other highlights, as part of the Connected Automation Experience Tour.

The factory of the future creates added value through flexibility and agility

In future production environments demands on adaptability will rise. This development can only be realized by separating hardware and software in automation. Bosch Rexroth AG promotes this development primarily with a broad product spectrum from sensors to drive and control technology to software solutions.

Intelligent hydraulics for increased availability

Connected hydraulics increase the availability of machinery and plants through condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. For this purpose, Rexroth offers scalable solutions, from individual units with local evaluation to the complete, cloud-based monitoring of large plants. Sensors measure all relevant operating conditions and software detects wear before it leads to failure. Retrofitting kits also economically integrate already installed plants into these concepts.
