The new, patented straightening machine for large workpieces from MAE Maschinen- und Apparatebau Götzen GmbH corrects bends in workpieces of a length of up to 30 meters accurate to 0.1 mm. The Sytronix variable speed pump drives used for moving the ram provide high energy efficiency and ensure precise movements. The creation of a drive solution tailored so perfectly to the application tasks was only possible because the machinery manufacturer MAE pooled its know-how with the technology experience of Bosch Rexroth.

"Our experience with regard to the process and to hydraulic drives is complemented in an ideal manner by Bosch Rexroth's deep understanding of all drive technologies and complex motion controls," emphasizes Manfred Mitze, Managing Director of MAE. The drive-based control integrated in the Sytronix variable speed pump drive provides high energy efficiency and, at the same time, ensures highly precise movements.

For its straightening machines for large workpieces, MAE relies on variable speed pump drives which were optimized by MAE and Rexroth exactly for this application in a joint development project. Two axial piston pumps create an operating pressure of 315 bar. The RICOS straightening controller developed by MAE measures the workpieces and, on the basis of these measurements, depending on the thickness and the type of the material, calculates the required stroke settings of the ram. "The process experience integrated in RICOS is our core competence," underscores Manfred Mitze. Below the machine control, the drive-based Rexroth IndraMotion MLD motion logic system controls the movements in a highly precise and dynamic manner. It closes the control loop between cylinder position, load and rotational speed of the pump drive in a decentralized way. The rotational speed control is performed so smoothly and with so much precision that MAE directly positions the control cylinder without any control valves. This simplifies the hydraulic circuit. In addition, the drive-based controls coordinate further servo drives in the machine.

The straightening machines for large work pieces from MAE, which are scalable with regard to pressure and dimensions, are used in steel works in order to correct bends in solid shaped workpieces and rollers. MAE is a medium-sized machine manufacturer located in Erkrath, in the lower Rhine Region in Germany, specializing in the core technologies straightening and assembling.
