Rexroth’s IndraDrive Mi Integrated Motor / Drive System Featured in Award-Winning Control Panel Design

Rexroth’s IndraDrive Mi integrated servo motor / drive system was a key part of CP Packaging’s award-winning swing-out control panel design
Using Rexroth integrated servo motor and drive units, CP Packaging designed a unique swing-out control panel, winning Control Engineering magazine’s 2009 control panel design contest.

(Hoffman Estates, IL — www.boschrexroth-us.com) Rexroth’s IndraDrive Mi integrated motor / drive system was featured in the winning entry from packaging machinery builder CP Packaging (Appleton, WI www.cppac.com) during Control Engineering magazine’s 2009 control panel design contest.

The contest gave machine builders the chance to show off their creativity and skills in designing and building control panels. For their entry, CP Packaging showed how they used the Rexroth IndraDrive Mi integrated servo motor / drive system as the foundation to help cut wiring costs, reduce cabinet space and speed up installation time on a unique swing-out, washdown-rated control panel for their VisionPak horizontal form-fill-and-seal machine.

Contest participants were required to submit a short tutorial video explaining the technical aspects and design logic behind their control panel design. They were also allowed to highlight one unique feature of their choice. All the entries were posted to Control Engineering’s website where viewers could watch, comment and vote for their favorite video. CP Packaging’s video highlighted the VisionPak’s swing-out control cabinet and innovative servo system.

“Sanitation, reliability and high performance were mission-critical requirements for this machine,” explained Ray Buchko, Jr., vice president of operations at CP Packaging. “We also wanted to lower the cost, reduce the footprint and speed up our installation time. Rexroth’s IndraDrive Mi system gave us the ability to solve these design challenges with our control cabinet.”

The IndraDrive Mi combines a traditional servo motor and drive into a single unit that’s 50 percent smaller in volume compared to traditional systems using a servo motor with a separate drive mounted in a cabinet. Rexroth’s daisy-chain cabling allows multiple IndraDrive Mi motor / drives to be connected with just a single power and communication cable.

“With Rexroth’s design we can move the servo drives out of the control cabinet directly to the machine,” said Buchko. “Not only did this cut our wiring costs by 30 percent, we reduced the control panel space by 50 to 60 percent and realized a 30 percent cost savings overall,” he said. “Using the daisy-chain connection means we can run our cables more effectively for washdown protection and put the control panel directly at the machine instead of remotely, saving us days of installation time.”
