Improving energy efficiency is one of the major challenges in machine engi-neering. Regulatory requirements such as TIER 4 final and rising energy pri-ces are major concerns for the industry. In addition, many companies want to reduce their carbon footprint. In order to design their machines and plants to be as energy efficient as possible, engineers must look at the overall system. Generally, merely optimizing individual parts is not enough. Bosch Rexroth, as a supplier of the full range of drive and control technologies, has therefore developed a consistent systematic approach called Rexroth for Energy Efficiency (4EE).

Rexroth 4EE uses four levers: Energy System Design comprises a systematic overall analysis, project planning, simulation, and consulting. Efficient Components are components and systems with optimized efficiency. Energy Recovery includes solutions such as the Hydrostatic Regenerative Braking System (HRB) in which surplus energy is recycled and stored. Energy on Demand refers to the supply of energy based on demand.

4EE can reduce the energy consumption of machines and plants significantly - without any losses in productivity. An example: The drives of complex ma-chines are hardly ever employed simultaneously. If they are permanently available, they unnecessarily consume energy. Bosch Rexroth's controllers and control systems switch energy consumers that are not needed at any given time into an energy-saving standby mode. The result: Increased energy efficiency, reduced CO2 emissions and lower energy costs.

Another example is the Sytronix variable speed pump drive, which lowers rotational speeds under partial load or during breaks all the way down to zero. This not only lowers direct energy consumption, but also reduces heat gene-ration, so that in most cases, no cooling is required at all.
