Tough conditions, tougher products

From the folklores of Parameswara to the present-day UNESCO World Heritage Site, plenty of tales have been told about the Melaka River. Centuries passed but the Melaka River still flowed for as long as anyone could remember.

As historical and mystical the past has been, The Melaka River still plays a vital role in modern day Malaysia. It flows through the old Melaka town, full of historical buildings and an important tourist area. To better manage the water flow of the river, the first electrical synchronization tilting gates in Malaysia has been proposed and built.

The gates have a threefold function:

1. Tourism – To support tourism activities, such as government functions, boat festivals, torch-relay sporting events, and various international festivals. As part of the “Heart of Malacca City”, the Melaka river is also branded the “Venice of Malacca”.
2. Flood control – To mitigate flooding and control water level flowing through the main tourist attraction areas and Melaka city.
3. Navigation – Gates act as an entry/exit control for boats and cruises passing between Straits of Melaka and Melaka River.

Together through Melaka City Council (MBMB) and various agencies such as the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) as well as partnering engineering firms and consultants such as USS Engineering, Aquarius Engineering Consultants and Kean Chooi Engineering, Bosch Rexroth supplied and participated in the historic moments of the first electrical synchronization tilting gates in Malaysia. In early February, Rexroth’s team has commissioned the factory acceptance test. Rexroth’s team was highly involved during the planning, designing, proposing, and consulting phase, resulting in strong confidence and trust over the product expertise.

The gates are faced with constant moist conditions. Therefore, required specialized large cylinder surface technology – which is why Bosch Rexroth’s Enduroq rod coatings were brought in. For all environmental situations, Enduroq surface technologies can offer excellent solutions. For this application, Rexroth recommended the usage of Enduroq 2200.

Enduroq 2200 is a thermal sprayed surface technology that protects piston rods against corrosion even in the most severe maritime environments. As an overview, benefits of Enduroq 2200 cover:

  • Extreme corrosion protection
  • Extreme high wear resistance
  • Extreme low porosity and zero permeability
  • Longer lifetimes and minimum downtime
