Stopping big loads safely
Increasing the productivity of an installed system and improving the safety in a standard-compliant manner through modernisation: This was the objective of the French natural rubber producer Le Joint Français in Saint-Brieuc, France. For the subsidiary of the Hutchinson group, the Safety Specialists from Rexroth developed a Hägglunds drive system for roll mills, which replaces an electromechanical drive.
The hydro transmission units with high starting torque and variable rotational speed enable a safe stop with a significantly shorter braking distance than the old solution. The old solution did not achieve the braking distance of 350 mm specified in the EN 1417 standard. The new solution from Rexroth exceeds this requirement. The tests performed during the commissioning showed that the final rotation angle at the stop of the machine is around 3 degrees. This corresponds to a braking distance of 18 millimeters. The Rexroth solution reduces the braking distance by more than 95 percent and thus significantly increases the safety for the operator.
The complete solution from Rexroth comprises a Hägglunds hydraulic motor, an emergency stop valve, pre-assembled accessories, a variable speed hydraulic transmission unit as well as support services during assembly and commissioning. The modernisation was completed within a few weeks.
